Why We Volunteer

Our volunteers come from all over the area to join our team and bring with them a wealth of unique experience and talent. In fact, many of our firefighters have come from other fire stations to gain the experience that only Darby can provide. Why do you volunteer and how have you personally benefitted from it?

“I volunteer because I like helping people,” said Philip Middaugh, who transferred from another fire company. “One way I benefitted was the training I received in the firehouse helps with my job as a HVAC technician.”

“Being a fifth generation firefighter, I felt the need to continue doing so,” said Michael Carr. ““I’ve received a lot of training and stayed out of trouble.”

“I volunteer because I like the excitement, group of guys, and serving the borough,” said John Ellis, who came to Darby from another firehouse. “I personally benefited from becoming a volunteer because of the jobs I have had.”

“I volunteer to help people on their worst days. Darby is like no other place I have ever been. I came from another fire company for that reason,” said Edward McBride. “I received a lot of training and it also helps me with my full time job I do every day.”

“I enjoy being able to help others,” Jimmy Watts, who transferred from another fire company. He said providing a service to the community is fulfilling.

“Because I love to help others. I started at another firehouse and now I’m here,” said Vincent Lanni. “Volunteering has helped me make many friends and being a volunteer at Darby #1 has helped me get jobs.”

“My volunteer experience gave me the fundamentals to branch into the paid fire/EMS sector,” said Jason O’Neill. “Joining a volunteer firehouse will yield you experiences and friendships unlike anywhere else.”
